THOUGHTS ABOUT AUSTRALIA

Australia. Toisella puolella maapalloa ja niin tuntematon. Kahdeksan tuntia Suomea edellä ja yli 13 000 kilometriä kauempana. Hämähäkkien ja käärmeiden maa, johon saapuminen oli niin erikoista, ettei sitä osannut kunnolla edes suunnitella. Eikä edes luoda kunnollisia odotuksia maata ja sen ihmisiä kohtaan, sillä määränpää oli sen verran tuntematon. Se on se maa, jossa kaikki on tavallaan samoin kuin Suomessa, mutta silti ihan väärin päin. Eikä mikään ole oikeastaan uutta, mutta samaan aikaan kaikki on niin kauhean uutta ja outoa. Täällä me ollaan, Australiassa.

Australia. On the other side of the earth and a land so unknown. The time is eight hours ahead of Finnish local time and 13 000 kilometers away from Finland. The land of the spiders and snakes, coming here was really special that you couldn't even plan it properly. We didn't even have the time to have thoughts about the country or people who are living here, because the destination was so unknown. Australia is the country where everything is like in Finland but still the opposite. Nothing is kinda new, but at the same everything is so horribly new and weird. Here we are, in Australia.

Saatiin tieto vaihtoon lähdöstä aprillipäivänä 1. huhtikuuta 2016. Oltiin kauhean onnellisia ja innoissamme tulevasta ja oli jännittävää suunnitella tulevaa lähtöä. Pitkään osattiinkin vain suunnitella lentoja Australiaan ja sitä, kuinka niistä selviäisimme. Viimeisillä hetkillä ennen lähtöä päässä pyöri vain epäselvät ajatukset siitä, että pitääköhän meidän vaihtaa lentojen välissä terminaaleja bussilla vai junalla ja kulkevatko matkatavarat mukana vai pitääkö niistä itse huolehtia jatkuvasti. Ajatukset pyörivät koko ajan lähdön ympärillä ja syksy oli kovin stressaava vaihdon järjestelyiden ja koulutehtävien vuoksi, mikä ei auttanut tilannetta yhtään. Kun vihdoin lähdimme joululomalle, oli olo helpottunut ja samalla niin jännittynyt. Tammikuun 3. päivä nousimme ensimmäiseen lentokoneeseen ja matkalle kohti tuntematonta.

We got the message on April 1st 2016 that we were going to exchange. We were so happy and excited about the upcoming exchange and it was exciting to plan the upcoming departure. For a long time we only planned the flights to Australia and the thing that how we would survive the flying all down to here. On the last moments before leaving Finland our heads were all dizzy of unclear thoughts that do we have to change terminals between the flights by bus or train, does our luggage go straight to the destination or do we have to take them with us between the flights. Our thoughts spinned around the departure all the time and the autumn was really stressful because of school work and exchange arrangements, which didn't help the situation at all. When we finally went to Christmas holidays our feelings were relieved and at the same time so tensed up. On January the 3rd we got on to the first airplane and to the journey to unknown.

Australia on nyt jo ylittänyt meidän molempien odotukset täysin, vaikka mitään selviä odotuksia meillä ei ollutkaan. Tiesimme vain, että täällä on kuuma ja että täällä on hyvin erilainen luonto kuin Suomessa. Tämä maa on kuitenkin yllättänyt meidät aivan täysin. Ihmiset ovat todella ystävällisiä ja varsinkin alussa oli outoa saada tervehdyksiä ohikulkijoilta ja käydä small talkkia kaupan kassan kanssa. Olo oli vähän sellainen että "mitä sä oikein mulle puhut", mutta halusimme palavasti oppia tämän ystävällisen ja päivää piristävän tavan. Nyt voimme jo ylpeästi sanoa, että osaamme vastata tervehdyksiin emmekä enää vaikuta tympeiltä turisteilta.

Australia has already exceeded both of our expectations fully, even though we didn't have any clear expectations after all. We just knew that it will be really hot and the nature is very different from ours in Finland. However this country has surprised us just completely. People here are really friendly and especially in the beginning it was weird to get greetings from bypassers and to have small talk with grocery stores cashier. The feeling at first was like "why are you talking to me" but we craved to learn this kind and day refreshing habit. Now we can proudly say that we know how to answer to greetings and we don't seem like unkind tourists.

Sää on jokapäivä kuuma. Muutamana päivänä on ukkostanut ja ukkoset täällä ovat aika hurjia. Muuten on paistanut aurinko oikein taivaan täydeltä heti aamusta asti. Koti-ikävää meillä ei ole ehtinyt tulemaan oikeastaan ollenkaan, vaikka tietenkin sitä kaipaa tiettyjä asioita. On kuitenkin turhaa nyt kokea ikävää, sillä haluamme ottaa kaiken irti tästä ajasta täällä. Puoliväli lähestyy pelottavan kovaa vauhtia ja samalla takaraivossa on kokoajan ajatus siitä, että jälkeenpäin ei haluta katua tekemättömiä asioita. Olemmekin ottaneet tähän mennessä kaiken irti reissusta maapallon toisella puolelle ja niin tulemme tekemään loppuajankin.

The weather is really hot everyday. There has been few days when it has been thundering and thunder is pretty fierce in here. Otherwise the sun has been shining all day from early morning. We haven't been home sick at all and probably won't be. Of course you miss some things. However it is pointless to feel homesickness now because we want make the most of the time being here. We are approaching the halfway of the exchange scarily fast and at the same time we have the thought in the back of our skulls that we don't want to regret afterwards things that we didn't do. So far we have made the most of our exchange and we certainly will do that for the rest of the time that we spend here.

On jännittävää, miten matka toiselle puolelle ei ole vain fyysinen siirtyminen maasta toiseen. Se on myös jonkinlainen siirtyminen eteenpäin meidän omissa ajatusmaailmoissa. On hyvin erilaista katsoa meidän omaa elämää tästä perspektiivistä, jolloin kaikki näyttää niin tylsältä ja arkiselta. Tämä matka on meissä herättänyt seikkailunhalua ja itsevarmuutta. On todella hienoa päästä kokemaan Australia, jonne matkustaminen on aina ollut salainen haave.

It is exciting how the trip to the other side of the earth isn't just a physical transmission from country to country. It is also some kind of transition forward on our own minds. It is very different to see our own life from this perspective when everything looks so ordinary and boring. This trip has waken up love of adventure and self confidence in us. It is very wonderful to experience Australia, where traveling has always been a secret dream.

Meillä on vielä monta hienoa seikkailua edessämme täällä Australiassa ja elämässä muutenkin. Aloitamme tänään jo pitkän viikonlopun, sillä meillä on viikonlopuksi ihania suunnitelmia luvassa. Lähdemme nimittäin huomenaamulla aikaisin kohti Moreton Islandia ja Tangalooma resorttia. Siitä lisää myöhemmissä postauksissa. 😉 Myös ensiviikon viikonloppuna toteutuu yksi suuri haave, josta puhuttiin paljon jo Suomessa ennen lähtöä. Nautitaan siis nyt täysin rinnoin!

We have so many more wonderful adventures to come here in Australia and in life anyway. We are starting our long weekend already today because we have some sweet plans for the upcoming weekend. You see we are leaving early tomorrow morning towards the Moreton Island and Tangalooma resort. More to come in upcoming posts. 😉 Also in the next weekend one big dream is coming true, a thing what we talked a lot about back in Finland. So let's fully enjoy our time now!
